Immigration is a topic that may put a lot of people in a very confusing situation. And with the rules changing so often it becomes difficult to keep track of all the changes that have taken place.

Most people who have moved here have family and friends back home and they want to invite them to the UK to meet them. The easiest way to get someone here is through a visitor visa. Previously there were many different visa categories for the visitor visa — family visitor visa, performance visitor visa, business visitor visa etc. It has now been decided that all the various categories will be consolidated into one single visitor visa category. People will now no longer have to make separate applications to visit family and can come down simply as a tourist. This change may make applying for a visitor visa a lot simpler than it used to be.

I got the chance to chat with Barrister Rajiv Sharma and we discussed a variety of topics related to immigration. When speaking about the visitor visa applications he said that it will become simpler for people to apply for a visitor visa because of the changes that are going to take place next month.

He also spoke about sponsoring someone on a visitor visa and the required documents or financial proof that needs to be submitted. Also he said that if you are not sponsoring the person but merely inviting them to come and live with you for the duration of the visit then only a letter stating your wishes is necessary.

But if you want to get your family to live here with you permanently then the rules are a lot different. He said that getting your wife or children is possible and relatively easy but getting your parents here to stay with you has become a lot more difficult.

We also spoke about appeals and he said that the visa categories that do not have the right of appeal might have the right of judicial review. He explained what exactly judicial review is and how it’s beneficial when there is no option to appeal against a decision.

Rajiv said that it’s important to read the application form properly. And also while making the application he said that it’s important to read all the requirements and submitting all the documents that might support your case or be relevant to your case. He also said that if while making an application there is some question in the form to which you don’t know the correct answer then it’s better to mention that you don’t know the correct answer rather than writing a wrong answer. Giving incorrect information on the form might make your case look suspicious.

I had a great time discussing immigration and understanding the changes that are about to take place in the near future.
