Every woman I know wants to have gorgeous skin like Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif however our diets, the weather and general stresses of life can take its toll and lead to acne, bad skin and pigmentation.

I used to break out in some horrible spots as a teenager and then with the use of numerous products my condition improved. But I know a lot of people who had major issues in their teens and twenties with spots.

Today I was joined by Dr Asoka Silva who graduated from University of Colombo in 1974. He received his Fellowship in Anaesthesia in Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1980. In 1981 he was admitted to the Fellowship of Anaesthesia of the Royal College of Surgeons in London. In 1982 he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians. He has anaesthetised over 37,000 patients and has a keen interest in Aesthetics and Cosmetic procedures.

Dr Asoka said that more and more men and women aspired to have great skin. He spoke about a lot of people getting “fillers” injected into their face to make it look more youthful and get rid of wrinkles. I was curious, as I know women who have had fillers and they look good when they have them done, however if they are not “maintained” regularly I have noticed the effects are worse that what they began with.

However, Dr Silva disagreed by saying they were harmless but it would of course be costly.

He stated there were various IPL treatments out there that could help scar removal. I was burnt as a child (by tipping a teapot of boiling water on my head). Even though I don’t have any burns I did have some silvery lines behind my arms, in my younger years they were really red and looked painful, and now look more silvery.

I know how much my scars affected my confidence and am sure there are many men and women who may have scars from accidents, operations and incidents which make them uncomfortable. Dr Silva suggested there very various oils out there that could be helpful for treatment. However he also suggested various form of laser treatment that would get rid of the scars over a number of sessions.

Here are some of the things I have used over the years to get rid of my scars and I hope they may be of some use to you:

  • Consider using aloe Vera gel. Aloe Vera’s anti-inflammatory properties help reduce skin irritations and help remove dead skin from wounds. Aloe Vera may also lessen swelling, help repair damaged skin cells, and fortify new skin cells being produced.
  • Try tea tree oil. This powerful oil is anti-bacterial and when used properly can gradually remove scars, including acne and surgical scars. Since it’s so strong, it should be diluted with water before being applied to the skin, and should NEVER be ingested.
  • Massage olive oil or Bio oil over the scar. Olive oil is rich in vitamins E and K, which are great for your skin and make this an effective ally in getting your scars to fade quickly. Virgin olive oil is particularly high in anti-oxidants and has higher acidity level, which helps to lighten the scars.
