The sitar is a plucked stringed instrument used mainly in Hindustani music and Indian classical music and is believed to have been derived from the veena, an ancient Indian instrument. On today’s show we have Niladri Kumar who is a zitarist (combination of the sitar and guitar). Kumar has created this unique instrument from a traveling sitar, which was modified by Kumar to create rock guitar sound out of it. Kumar’s first full album composed using the instrument, titled Zitar, was released in 2008. Over the next five years he improvised the tracks adding components from various genres such as rock, electronic and lounge.
