“Physically I live in London, but intellectually and emotionally, I live in India. I work in a country where I am constantly Indianising the West.” So said Mira Kaushik, director of Akademi, an institution that has pioneered new visions of dance, synthesised traditional and contemporary influences and cultural exchange, and become a part of the artistic DNA of the UK. Traditional dance forms in India are usually very rigid but Mira has restructured certain forms and made them her own so they would be retain their classicism as well as be fun, enjoyable and relatable for all kinds of people.
