To conclude our yoga week here on Zee Companion and with the weekend coming up, it was perfect that we decided to take up yoga to distress!  And pregnancy yoga. Practically every expert that has been on the show and has been asked “is yoga good for pregnant women?” Each has said the same thing – Yoga can be very beneficial during pregnancy, as long as you take certain precautions.

Yoga helps one breathe and relax, which in turn can help one adjust to the physical demands of pregnancy, labour, birth and motherhood. It calms both the mind and body, providing physical and emotional stress relief that one’s body needs throughout one’s pregnancy. Taking a prenatal yoga class is also a great way to meet other mums-to-be.

On today’s show we had Naadia Raafat, co-founder of Battersea yoga, who has been practicing the art of yoga for 11 years. Nadia is also a qualified baby yoga practitioner. She joined me on the show and said that all expectant Mothers should consider yoga safe, as she herself has given birth and carried out yoga techniques for a long time. She showed some relaxing movements to improve back pain and suggested that expectant Mum’s who were interested in yoga should look into yoga classes for Mum’s to be.

In the second half of the show we talked about yoga being used to “de-stress”. We all have so many worries such as family, money, job, children and work that we often do not get the time to relax and if we do, we are never quite sure how to relex!

So that was my question-How does one relax? It has been said for many years that yoga helps a person to de-stress and regardless of where you are there is something you can do to ease the pressure and tension in your body.

I was joined by Shaura Hall who has worked in complementary health since 2005, and is an accredited yoga teacher with yoga alliance. She also is a yoga therapist for mental health patients with the mindful Institute. Shaura said that one should always make time to be mindful and be with oneself.

She also said that, one could do the “warrior pose” to relax and above all she whole heartedly praised the yoga day initiative and said more people should get involved with the practice as it was good for the mind body and soul.

Therefore there is no doubt in my mind after having hosted the first and last show of Zee Companion’s yoga week that yoga is incredibly therapeutic. There are so many different types of yoga that one can do, it’s important that you find one that suits you and your lifestyle.
