Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative, called International Yoga Day, will be observed on June 21, hopes to see yoga fuelled events in India as well in 192 other countries, making it the biggest event ever for which the government has also applied to the Guinness World Records.

The Prime Minister, an avid practitioner himself, has unveiled a new microsite dedicated to the day which provides details about programmes to be conducted across the world on June 21 and later.

As huge supporters of healthy living, wellbeing, fitness and being incredibly patriotic it seemed only right that we supported his initiative to promote yoga on Zee Companion.

Today I was joined by Yoga guru Neil Patel. Neil’s mother, Tara Patel, taught yoga for nearly 40 years so yoga and meditation have been a part of his life ever since he was a very young child. He has been teaching yoga since he was a teenager and is well into his third decade as a yoga teacher.

Neil founded Chi Kri as a way of using yoga to help improve peoples’ lives and make yoga accessible to the widest sections of society. While classical yoga is a well developed system for enhancing health and spiritual growth, its traditional methods may not always appeal to everyone.

Chi kri yoga is a multi-dimensional form of yoga that combines a number of disciplines and Neil knows that Chi Kri is great for a number of people from various walks of life.

A lot of people wanted to know what were some of the best things one could do to cure pain in ones feet. Neil and Arti showed a simple exercise where one could stand up on a flat space and simply rotate one’s foot in a clockwise and anticlockwise movement.

He also said that for people with knee pain (and there were a lot of them!) it would be good to stand straight, slowly bend your knee and rotate it at a 360 degree rotation, this would help keep the joint limber. He said it was important for everyone to do pelvic floor exercises especially for those who suffer from incontinence.

All in all it was a very productive show — we had lots of young callers who were novices as well as some in their 70s and 80s who have been practicing yoga for a long time. It’s clear that yoga week is certainly going to be very popular on Zee Companion.
