2016 is just around the corner and for many of you – it will be your year! Yes I am talking about all of you bride-to-be’s getting ready for your big day. I know that if you are preparing for your big day, you will be thinking about your look, style, hair and makeup. So, I asked Amrit Taglani, Director of Amrit Beauty, for his expert advice and to get you those all-important beauty tips and tricks.

For the traditional bride on her engagement

If you are opting for a traditional look at your engagement, you should go for less as less is more. Stick to peach lips and browns on the eyes – do not go too heavy. Also stick to a little bit of blusher. If you want your hair down, opt for curls. But if you’re going for the princess, Cinderella, look, and have a tiara, then go with your hair all up. Amrit also advised keeping all of your looks very different for your engagement, wedding day, and reception.

For the traditional bride on her wedding day

If you want to opt for a traditional look on your wedding day, Amrit advised following suit of the classic films such as Devdas and Umrao Jaan. The traditional look is not just about red colours on the lips but also brown colours. Amrit advised keeping the entire look matt as opposed to sparkly as that filters into the modern look. So stick to red lipstick shades and golds and bronze eyeshadows with a matt finish.

For the modern bride on her engagement

For our modern brides, Amrit said go for glitter! Have a more dewy look by keeping your foundation matt but highlighting the cheeks. Go heavy on the eyes with a smoky-eye look and light on the lips or go for light eye makeup and brighter on the lips. Don’t do both! Amrit suggested that 2016 is all about the smoky eye and nude lip look!

For the modern bride on her wedding day

Once again, a modern bride opts for more sparkles so go with glittery eyes matching the silver or gold on your outfit. Stay away from red colours on your eyes and cheeks – stick to red on your lips only! I am definitely an advocate for that too – red eyeshadows and blushers are not something I would endorse!

One thing that we all want to know, not just brides, is keeping our skin looking fresh and clean before a big and important day. I am sure many of you have woken up to a nightmare spot ahead of a big occasion, so I asked Amrit exactly what to do in this case.

Amrit advised that in the run-up to any big occasion, do not change your normal routine or start testing new products as this can cause an outbreak. Keep up your normal routine. If you do not have good skin, see a dermatologist who can help you. Also, avoid dairy products.

You should also cleanse, tone and moisturise every day. If you have oily skin, you should use a moisturiser that is non-comedogenic as this will clog your pores. If you have dry skin, you need something more moisturising as you don’t want your skin to dry up more. Scrubs are harsh on the skin so you shouldn’t use them all the time.

For dry skin, you should use a liquid foundation and on oily skin you should use a powdered foundation. Then, use an orange-toned concealer as this throws the light away from it. For example, when you walk into a room with the lights on, you will see me. When you walk into a room with the lights switched off, you won’t see me. The same works with concealer. Use a darker shade to cover things up and a lighter one to highlight.

Getting your eye makeup right

Use a primer on your eyes and before you apply your foundation otherwise your eyeshadow will start creasing. Use the correct concealer under your eyes so that they don’t look ash grey. And then apply your eyeshadow.

To get the smoky eye look, you should use a black eye liner gel mixed with water or fix-glass and dab onto your eyes so that it comes out jet black, as opposed to using black eyeshadow which mostly comes out grey. You can then add golds on top of the black to make the gold show up more.

What to do about chapped lips?

We all love a matt lipstick but if your lips don’t look right, neither will the lipstick. Amrit recommended a home-made remedy that you can use to exfoliate your lips and remove the dead skin. Quite simply, mix salt or sugar into water and scrub your lips with this mixture.

To achieve a daytime look with your makeup, use mineral based makeup. Then, to transform this into a glamourous evening look, take these 5 products in your makeup bag:

  1. Mascara
  2. Powder
  3. Blusher
  4. Lip gloss
  5. Eyebrow shadow

If you want some style inspiration for your hair, Amrit recommended using coconut and almond oil as it makes your hair thicker and gives it a brown tone.

When it comes to applying makeup, we think that we need many tools to get it right. Amrit said you need the following:

  1. Makeup brush
  2. Angled eye liner brush which helps for both eye liner and eyebrow shadow
  3. Geo-fibre foundation brush
  4. Contour brush for blusher
  5. A concealer brush
  6. An eyeshadow blending brush

Amrit’s top tips and advice was to use an orange concealer, use the right foundation by checking if you have a pink tone or a yellow tone to your skin, and to check your skin tone so that you get the overall look right.
